Micheal Vozar, Detachment Commander, Illinois 2023-24

Michael Vozar is a 13 year member in good standing of the Sons of the American Legion
at Bayard Brown Squadron 337 in Genoa, Illinois.

His eligibility is thru his Father, Stephen Vozar Jr, who served in the United States Coast Guard during WWII in as a Chief Machinists Mate on the USCGC Escanaba assigned to the Greenland Patrol performing convoy escort duty along with search and rescue operations in the North Atlantic. His father was a Life Member and Commander of American Legion Post 28 in Grand Haven, Michigan and his mother was Auxiliary Unit President.

Mike developed a lifelong passion for Americanism and a strong desire to help veterans early on as
a young “Legion Brat” hanging out at the Post helping his parents with Post events and community projects.
There was not a SAL Squadron at the time. Most Post members were WWII and Korea veterans, and
he learned a lot from them. Mike was an Eagle Scout, Oratorical Contest participant, and citizen at
Wolverine Boys State.

He has held elected Squadron, District, Division, and Detachment leadership positions in the Sons of The American Legion. This past year as Detachment Senior Vice Commander Mike led membership efforts that resulted in over 101% membership and over 90% retention. He is an appointed member of the American Legion Illinois Premier Boys State Committee and a volunteer for Honor Flight Chicago.

A graduate of Central Michigan University and The University of Michigan Executive Education Program, Mike works as a risk management and loss control consultant following a 30 year career with several national insurance companies.
He is the proud father of five usually well behaved grown children (three daughters and two sons) and has a terrific grandson!

Mike is committed to supporting the Four Pillars of The American Legion
His Commanders Project is supporting Honor Flight Network.
